An introduction to suture techniques

When closing a wound it is important to remember that wound edges swell with inflammation, and weaken in the first few days post-surgery. Because the wound edges swell, over-tight sutures will cut off the tissue blood supply during this period and poorly spaced sutures (incorrect distance from the wound edge) will cut into tissues and may tear through them.

Sutures are usually placed with the aid of needle holders and tissue forceps. Once an appropriate suture material has been selected, you are ready to proceed. Ensure you know how to hold the needle holders correctly. Inefficient suture technique results in a lot of wasted time, fatigue for the operator and can compromise wound healing. It is important to select an appropriate type and size of needle and suture to close wounds effectively.
