CLAST Webinar: Pain and Distress in Rodents – What Everyone Must Know!

Introduction

An online seminar titled “Pain and Distress in Rodents – What Everyone Must Know!” was held on 22 April 2026. This event marks the first webinar in a new series organised by the College of Laboratory Animal Science (CLAST).

This session set out to tackle one of the most challenging aspects of laboratory animal science: recognising and assessing pain and distress in rodents. Given the subtle and often species-specific nature of behavioural and physiological indicators, this remains a complex area for both new and experienced professionals. The webinar provided a concise but insightful overview of key concepts, practical indicators, and common pitfalls, helping attendees build confidence in identifying welfare concerns and supporting better decision-making in animal care and research.

As an introductory session, the seminar was designed to spark interest and lay the groundwork for deeper learning. Those who found the topic engaging are encouraged to join Paul on one of his upcoming workshops.
