Workshops Should Always Make You Think!

We’re currently running one of our anaesthesia workshops, and I have to say – it’s been a fantastic experience so far. I’m teaching a particularly enthusiastic group of participants who keep coming up with interesting (i.e. “difficult”) questions. Many of these have involved the use of analgesics in rats and mice, and I have had to defer more detailed discussions of some of these until our pain management workshop.

Luckily, there’s more to come. If you’re curious about some of the more nuanced areas of pain management in rodents, make sure to join us for our upcoming Laboratory Animal Welfare Workshops focused on Pain and Distress in Rodents and Rabbits.

Here’s a taste of what we’ll be diving into:

  • Local Anaesthetics – Why we should use them, how we should use them, at what dosage, and why we shouldn’t have unrealistic expectations of their durations of action.
  • NSAIDs in Mice – Are they truly effective, or are some commonly used doses falling short? And how worried should we be about potential side effects?
  • Analgesics in Drinking Water – This is a hot topic! I’ve traditionally been skeptical about this method, but recent publications are challenging my thinking. Could it be time to revise my view?
  • Alternative Analgesics – What about paracetamol or metamizole? Can they be used effectively in rodents, and when might they be particularly useful?

We’re also thrilled to have Matt Leach joining us to provide expert insight into pain assessment in rodents and rabbits – an essential skill for anyone working with these species.

If you’ve ever left a workshop with more questions than answers, you’ll feel right at home here. That’s the point – to challenge assumptions, rethink practices, and ultimately improve animal welfare through better science.

Registration is still open, but will close soon, so don’t miss out.
