Mongolian gerbils are popular in biomedical research because of their docile nature and ease of care. Understanding their biology and reproduction is crucial for welfare and reliable results.
General Biology
Gerbils are small desert-adapted rodents originating from the arid regions of Mongolia and Northern China. Their physiology reflects their natural environment: they have efficient water conservation mechanisms, a high tolerance for dry conditions, and strongly demonstrate burrowing behaviour. These traits have important implications for laboratory housing and care, including the need for deep bedding and stable social grouping.
Adult gerbils typically weigh between 55–100 grams, depending on sex, with males being slightly larger than females. Their lifespan in laboratory settings averages 3–4 years, although genetics and husbandry practices can influence longevity. Gerbils exhibit a relatively low daily food and water intake compared to other rodents of similar size, reflecting their desert heritage.
Reproductive Biology
Gerbils reach sexual maturity at approximately 9–12 weeks of age. Once paired, they tend to form strong monogamous bonds, making stable breeding pairs a common management strategy. They have a short estrus cycle and a gestation period of roughly 24–26 days.
A notable feature of gerbil reproduction is postpartum estrus, which allows females to become pregnant again within 24 hours of giving birth. This can result in back-to-back litters if breeding is not carefully managed. Litters typically contain 3–7 pups, with an average of 5, and pups are weaned at around 20–26 days.
Gerbil breeding performance is generally sustained for 12–17 months, and commercial breeding operations often achieve between 4 and 10 litters per breeding pair.
