SUMMARY:Workshop: Anaesthesia and Perioperative Care of Laboratory Animals
DESCRIPTION:The previously advertised 'Day 4' covering large animals and co-presented by Eddie Clutton\, has been postponed to December 2025. The details listed below have been updated to remove this option for the May workshop.\nIntroduction\n\nThe workshop will take place in May 2025\, featuring pre-recorded and live webinars\, along with e-learning modules. The new format for the workshop will provide information on refinement and best practice for rodent anaesthesia. \nThe workshop will be hosted by Prof. Paul Flecknell\, the focus will be on small rodents on the Research Animal Training website and is designed for animal technicians\, veterinarians\, researchers\, and anyone else eager to deepen their knowledge on the subject and enhance their existing protocols with innovative refinements. \n\nScheduling\n\nAll participants will have access to pre-recorded seminars and a series of e-learning modules.\nParticipants can easily schedule their viewing of the pre-recorded materials\, which are divided into independent video segments lasting 15-30 minutes each.\nThe e-learning modules\, aligned with EU21 learning outcomes\, are divided into lessons\, allowing participants to pause and resume their studies at their convenience.\n\nLive sessions are scheduled as below \n\nDay 1 – May 12th – 14:00 to 16:00 (UK time)\nDay 2 – May 13th – 14:00 to 16:00 (UK time)\nDay 3 – May 14th – 14:00 to 16:00 (UK time)\n\nCost\n\n3-day workshop £300 GBP\n1-year access to Research Animal Training included\n\nContent\n\nMore than 7 hours of recorded seminars.\n8 online e-learning modules.\nParticipate in three engaging 120-minute live sessions focused on problem-solving with rodents.\nAdditional reading and reference material.\nAll pre-recorded materials are accessible prior to the workshop\, and participants are strongly encouraged to watch them before attending the live sessions.\nParticipants will have access to all content for a duration of three months following its release date.\nBy registering for the workshop\, you will gain access to a wealth of other training materials available on the RAT website.\n\nInteractivity\nThe pre-recorded content and e-learning modules will be accessible on www.researchanimaltraining.com\, while live sessions will take place on the Zoom video platform (zoom.us). For an engaging interactive experience\, we incorporate Mentimeter (mentimeter.com) during the sessions. \nWhile not mandatory\, having a smartphone or tablet in addition to a laptop can enhance your experience during the interactive sessions. \nTopics Covered\nDays 1-3 \n14:00 – 16:00: Interactive Sessions: Managing Anaesthesia in Laboratory Rodents. \n\n\n\nThese sessions will employ a scenario-based approach to inspire participants to leverage their knowledge and understanding of anaesthesia to tackle various challenges.\nThere will be opportunity for open discussion and a Q&A session.\n\n\n\nTo ensure that interactive sessions remain effective\, participation will be limited.

SUMMARY:Laboratory Animal Welfare Workshop 1: Foundations of Pain and Distress Management in Rodents and Rabbits
DESCRIPTION:Introduction\n\nRecognising\, preventing and alleviating pain and distress in laboratory animals is a key responsibility of all those involved in their care and use. This workshop is one of two linked workshops. It deals with broader concepts of animal welfare\, sources of pain and distress\, and the refinement of research procedures. Workshop 2 focuses on assessing and alleviating post-operative pain and distress. \nThis first workshop will take place in May 2025\, featuring live webinars\, along with new e-learning modules. It focusses on optimising the welfare of laboratory rodents and rabbits and will discuss both procedure-related and other sources of pain and distress. We aim to provide an overview of animal welfare and the nature of stress and distress\, together with the practical application of this knowledge to optimise animal welfare. \nCourse tutors will be Professor Paul Flecknell and Dr Matt Leach. \n\nScheduling\n\nParticipants will be required to review e-learning modules prior to attending a series of live sessions.\nParticipants may find it helpful to review some of the recommended reading before the live sessions.\n\nLive sessions are scheduled as below \n\nDay 1 – May 21st – 14:00 to 16:00 (UK time)\nDay 2 – May 22nd – 14:00 to 16:00 (UK time)\n\nCost\n\nThe registration fee for the workshop is £300 GBP and links to register can be found at the bottom of this page.\nThe number of participants will be restricted so that the interactive sessions remain manageable.\nA discount of £100 can be claimed if you register for both Workshop 1 and Workshop 2\n1-year access to Research Animal Training included\n\nContent\n\n4 new e-learning modules.\n2 live sessions\, each of 150-180 minutes including a Q & A session and opportunities for general discussions.\nAdditional reading and reference material.\nAll e-learning content is available in advance of the workshop\, and a suggested timetable for completion will be provided.\nParticipants will be able to access all content (after its release date) for a period of 3 months.\nRegistration for the workshop also includes access to all of the other training materials on the RAT website.\n\nInteractivity\nThe e-learning modules will be accessible on www.researchanimaltraining.com\, while live sessions will take place on the Zoom video platform (zoom.us). For an engaging interactive experience\, we incorporate Mentimeter (mentimeter.com) during the sessions. \nWhile not mandatory\, having a smartphone or tablet in addition to a laptop can enhance your experience during the interactive sessions. \nTopics Covered\n\nWhat is stress\, distress\, pain and suffering? – An introduction and explanation of these key concepts relevant to assessing animal welfare.\nWhy we need to assess animal welfare\, and how to do it – An overview of how methods of assessing animal welfare have evolved\, and an up-to-date summary of the methods that can be used in a range of different species.\nSeverity assessment\, using scoresheets\, humane endpoints – Why and how we should assess the severity of procedures and how we should approach “cumulative severity” assessment. How should we set humane endpoints\, and how can they be best used to limit the negative impact of procedures.\nReducing and preventing pain\, suffering and distress – How we should apply an understanding of animal welfare to minimise pain\, suffering and distress\, including the use of anaesthesia and sedation\, and analgesia.\nInteractive sessions on positive and negative welfare states – The live sessions will build on the e-learning topics to encourage participants to apply all the information given to “Refine” some examples of research techniques. These sessions will also incorporate extensive Q and A sessions.\n\nRegistration for this workshop is now closed.
