DESCRIPTION:Introduction\n\n\nThis workshop will be delivered using a combination of pre-recorded webinars\, “live” webinars and e-learning modules.\nThe course tutor will be Professor Paul Flecknell.\nThe workshop will be hosted on the Research Animal Training website.\nThe registration fee for the workshop is £300 GBP (approx. €360) and registration can be made at the bottom of this page.\nA discount of £50 can be claimed if you sign up for our Pain and Anaesthesia Courses at the same time.\nThe number of participants will be restricted so that the interactive sessions remain manageable.\n\n\nScheduling\n\nParticipants will be required to review pre-recorded seminars prior to attending a series of live sessions.\nTo assist in the scheduling of the pre-recorded materials\, we present each of these as a series of shorter (15-30 minute) video sequences which can be viewed independently.\nA series of e-learning modules\, dealing with all of the learning outcomes of EU21 are also included in the course\, to provide information and explanation to support the seminar topics.\nThese e-learning modules are also broken up into a series of lessons so that participants can break and resume their studies at their convenience.\nLive sessions will start each day at 13:00 (UK) time.\n\nContent\n\nOver 7 hours of pre-recorded seminars.\n3 x 90 minute live “problem-based” sessions.\n8 e-learning modules.\nAdditional reading and reference material.\nAll pre-recorded content is available in advance of the workshop and a suggested timetable for completion will be provided.\nParticipants will be able to access all content (after its release date) for a period of 3 months.\nRegistration for the workshop also includes access to all of the other training materials on the RAT website.\n\nInteractivity\n\nThe pre-recorded material and e-learning modules will be delivered via www.researchanimaltraining.com and the live sessions using the Zoom video platform (zoom.us).\nMentimeter (mentimeter.com) and Padlet (padlet.com) may be used for the interactive sessions.\nAlthough not essential\, it may be easier to have a smartphone as well as a laptop for the interactive sessions.\n\nTopics Covered\n\nAnaesthesia and the 3Rs – An introduction to laboratory animal anaesthesia\, reviewing current practice and providing an overview of the use of anaesthesia in laboratory animals and its impact on refinement.\nChoosing and using anaesthetic and analgesics agents – A review of the different injectable and inhalation agents and how they can be used in laboratory rodents and rabbits. An overview of analgesic agents that can be used for pain management and as part of balanced anaesthetic regimens.\nManaging and monitoring anaesthesia – Making sure anaesthesia is as safe and effective as possible\, what monitoring devices are available and how can they best be used in rodents and rabbits.\nDealing with problems and emergencies – What to do when things go wrong – and how to prevent problems happening.\nManaging long-term anaesthesia – A review of the difficulties associated with prolonged anaesthesia\, the advantages and disadvantages of specific anaesthetic agents.\nWorking with neonatal and aged animals – Specific issues related to anaesthesia and perioperative care of neonatal animals and aged animals.\nPost-operative care – Providing supportive post-operative care\, including management of post-operative pain.\nInteractive sessions: managing laboratory animal anaesthesia – These sessions will use a scenario-based approach to encourage participants to apply their knowledge and understanding of anaesthesia to solve a number of different problems. Time will also be provided for general discussion and a Question and Answer session.

SUMMARY:Workshop: Assessment\, Prevention and Alleviation of Pain and Distress in Laboratory Animals
DESCRIPTION:Introduction\n\n\nThis workshop will be delivered using a combination of pre-recorded webinars\, “live” remote seminars and e-learning modules.\nCourse tutors will be Professor Paul Flecknell and Dr Matt Leach.\nThe workshop will be hosted on the Research Animal Training website.\nThe registration fee for the workshop is £250 GBP (approx. €300) and links to register can be found at the bottom of this page.\nThe number of participants will be restricted so that the interactive sessions remain manageable.\nA discount of £50 can be claimed if you sign up for our Pain and Anaesthesia Courses at the same time.\nThis workshop is aimed at animal technicians\, veterinarians\, research workers and others who want to improve their understanding of this topic.\n\n\nScheduling\n\nParticipants will be required to review pre-recorded seminars and complete e-learning modules prior to attending a series of live sessions.\nTo assist in the scheduling of the pre-recorded materials\, we present each of these as a series of shorter (15-30 minute) video sequences which can be viewed independently.\nThe e-learning modules are also broken up into a series of lessons so that participants can break and resume their studies at their convenience.\nLive sessions will run from 14:00 (UK) time on each day.\n\nContent\n\nOver 5 hours of pre-recorded seminars.\n4 live sessions\, each of 45-60 minutes followed by a 15 minute Q & A.\n4 e-learning modules (Recognition of pain and distress\, Severity Assessment\, Pain management and Pain Assessment).\nAdditional reading and reference material.\nAll pre-recorded content is available in advance of the workshop and a suggested timetable for completion will be provided.\nParticipants will be able to access all content (after its release date) for a period of 3 months.\nRegistration for the workshop also includes access to all of the other training materials on the RAT website.\n\nInteractivity\n\nThe pre-recorded material and e-learning modules will be delivered via www.researchanimaltraining.com and the live sessions using the Zoom video platform (zoom.us).\nMentimeter (mentimeter.com) and Padlet (padlet.com) may be used for the interactive sessions.\nAlthough not essential\, it may be easier to have a smartphone as well as a laptop for the interactive sessions.\n\nTopics Covered\n\nWhat is pain and distress? – An introduction to what we know about pain and distress in people and animals and an explanation of some of the concepts relevant to assessing animal welfare.\nWhy we need to assess pain and distress\, and how to do it – An overview of how methods of assessing pain and distress have evolved\, and an up-to-date summary of the methods that can be used in a range of different species.\nCage-side methods of pain assessment – A series of live webinars which will enable participants to practice pain scoring techniques\, focusing on assessing animal behaviour\, assessing pain faces in rats and mice and assessing pain faces in non-rodent species.\nSeverity assessment\, using scoresheets and refining procedures – A series of e-learning modules dealing with assessing the severity of procedures. They explain the legal\, ethical and practical issues surrounding assessment of severity. The modules also include an explanation of prospective\, ongoing and retrospective assessment of severity\, and examples of severity assessments.\nPain\, nociception and how analgesics work – How different types of analgesic act to reduce or eliminate pain with links to our understanding of nociception and pain in animals.\nAnalgesics – what to give\, when and how – A review of the practicalities of managing pain in a research setting and a brief overview of pain management in non-mammalian species with additional information on analgesic use in larger mammals.\nUsing analgesics in a research environment – problems and pitfall – A review of some of the reasons for the low level of use of analgesics in research animals and how some of these barriers to effective pain relief can be overcome.\nPost-operative care – An e-learning module outlining methods of reducing\, avoiding or alleviating pain and distress by improving perioperative care\, providing high standards of animal care\, and by the refinement of research procedures.\nPractical exercises in avoiding and minimising pain and distress – An interactive session to enable participants to apply all the information given during the workshop to “Refine” some examples of research techniques. This will be a longer session to allow for a more extensive final Q and A session.
